I Feel Pretty

This is the story of an ugly duck that tries to be a swan, and fails.

It is billed as a comedy because Amy Schumer is a successful stand-up and TV comedienne. There are no laughs unless you think being overweight, loud and inyaface is funny, but there is a message that Cyndi Lauper tells better in True Colours. Be yourself.

Renee (Schumer) has a hang up. She thinks models have it easy. They look great. Most guys would agree. So what? Guys don't count. She knows she's never going to be like them because when she goes into a trendy clothes store they tell her, "You'll find your size online."

She has two loser girlfriends who don't care. They go to clubs and get rat arsed. Renee wants more. She wants to work for the most famous couturier in town (wherever that is - New York, L.A, somewhere smart) and so goes for an interview with a bunch of stylish skinnies for a job as receptionist in their head office.

By some miracle, otherwise known as Hollywood, she gets the job, meets the top honchos, all members of the same family, who like her attitude (bog savvy) because she's from the real world, or so they think, while they are locked away in fake world where a pretty face and a body that attracts boys and girls is where it's at.

Already the film has reached the shall I leave now or later stage. Why later? Renee's character is beyond empathy in the realm of thanks-but-no-thanks. She has discovered that beautiful young women can be insecure. Wow! Pinch me.

Schumer's lack of charm may be the way certain performers present themselves these days. If so, where's the joke?

I Feel Pretty is as phony as Bad News Bears, only less entertaining.
